Traditions - Multicultural Literature and the Inquiry Approach for the Primary Grades

What's Inside

Traditions are an integral part of who we are and how we relate to others. Through a weekly framework, called READ (Read, Extend, Apply, and Demonstration of Learning), students use social studies texts and multicultural children's literature to inquire: What is a tradition? How do we learn traditions? Where might we see traditions practiced? Why are traditions important to us? The texts used in this unit represent multiple genres and varied levels of text complexity to accommodate a wide range of student interests and abilities while addressing multiple Common Core State Standards.
