Jeanette Toomer

Jeanette Toomer is a 12th-grade English language arts teacher at Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health and Science Charter High School in Bronx, New York.

Since 2001, she has taught English language arts and literature, primarily in New York public high schools. In addition, she has served as a staff developer for schools and educational corporations. She integrates educational strategies into her teaching strategies to increase student engagement. Over the years, she has taught all high school grades and a few years as a first-year composition professor in local colleges.

Jeanette has led several Read Ins and Poetry Slams for schoolwide student events. In addition, she has created and written curricula for 10th-, 11th-, and 12th-grade courses. As a trained Ramp-Up teacher, she has integrated the teaching of reading strategies in all grade levels. She also created a social change research project based on Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye.
