Associate Professor Katina Zammit is passionate about improving literacy outcomes for students from socio-economically disadvantaged and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. She collaborates closely with teachers in schools undertaking projects to improve students’ engagement and outcomes in literacy focusing on developing students’ multiple literacies and making connections between changes in teacher practices and student outcomes.
Katina's research on student engagement, writing, multiliteracies, translanguaging, and pedagogy has been published in peer-reviewed journals and as chapters in numerous books. Her commitment to supporting effective literacy teaching practices is reflected in her positions as president of the Australian Literacy Educators Association (ALEA) and on ALEA Sydney West Local Council, which support teachers, parents, and teacher educators with professional learning and access to evidence-based practices in three professional journals: Practical Literacy in the Primary and Early Years, Literacy Learning the Middle Years, and Australian Journal of Language and Literacy. Katina also serves on the International Development of Oceania Committee, which supports literacy projects in countries such as Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and the Cook Islands.
