September 1 is the Deadline for Feitelson Award Nominations

 | Aug 29, 2012

The International Reading Association (IRA) Dina Feitelson Research Award, a US$500 award supported by Jehuda Feitelson, was established to honor the memory of Dina Feitelson for a current literature published worldwide focusing on reading and related disciplines to recognize an outstanding empirical study published in English in a refereed journal.

Nominations for the 2013 IRA Dina Feitelson Research Award are due by September 1, 2012, and are open to all literacy professionals. Authors may nominate themselves. Works published between January 2011 and December 2011 may be nominated. Eligible works include reports on an investigation of aspects of literacy acquisition such as phonemic awareness, the alphabetic principle, bilingualism, home influences on literacy development, or cross-cultural studies of beginning reading. The results of the study should have clear implications for instruction.

The author(s) of the selected work will receive recognition during IRA’s 58th Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas, on April 19-22, 2013.

The 2012 award was given to Sheila W. Valencia (University of Washington, Seattle, Washington), Antony T. Smith (University of Washington, Bothell, Washington), Anne M. Reece (Highline School District, Seattle, Washington), Min Li (University of Washington, Seattle, Washington), Karen K. Wixson (University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina), and Heather Newman (Tukwila School District, Tukwila, Washington) for their piece “Oral Reading Fluency Assessment: Issues of Construct, Criterion, and Consequential Validity” published in Reading Research Quarterly Volume 4 in 2010.
