Winning Graphic Novels - Blending Visual Literacy With the Common Core

What's Inside

Although children increasingly find reading enjoyment from graphic novels, teachers may have reservations about the genre's place in classroom reading. In this article, Tucker and Tucker discuss the value of graphic novel reading, explore its rising popularity as a Children's Choices award favorite, and suggest three strategies to help teachers introduce great graphic novels to their students and still meet the CCSS. The authors show how double-entry journals, ACCT, and cubing can be used to incorporate visual literacy comprehension elements into lessons that utilize graphic novels.
