ILA has been a constituent member of NCATE (now CAEP) since 1980. As one of approximately thirty Specialized Professional Associations (SPAs), we have developed a strong and positive role within the CAEP coalition. CAEP has member organizations of teachers, teacher educators, content specialists, and local and state policy makers that are all committed to advancing excellence in educator preparation and the ultimate goal of strengthening pre-K–12 student learning. Together, these organizations represent more than 3 million individuals. CAEP's professional associations also provide financial support and participate in the development of standards, policies, and procedures.
Members of ILA's Professional Standards and Ethics project serve as advisors on the ILA-CAEP partnership and (along with other ILA literacy professionals) serve as program reviewers to strengthen reading specialist/literacy coach education programs nationwide.
